Richard Carswell, 90, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2016, at the Osage Nursing Center in Osage City, Kansas.
Funeral services for Richard are set for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016, at the Quenemo United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Quenemo. The family plans to receive friends 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, 2016, at the Feltner Funeral Home in Lyndon.
Richard was born Feb. 5, 1926, to Edwin and Juanita (Bloyd) Carswell. He grew up on a farm near Alton, Kansas and graduated from Alton High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, fighting in France and Germany. While still overseas, he was badly burned in an accident and spent months in hospitals before being discharged. In 1952, Richard and his parents moved to Quenemo and continued farming there.
Richard married Mary Jo Lewis June 1, 1956. He worked as a barber and a napkin printer operator for Hallmark in Osage City to support his love of farming. He was a member of the Quenemo United Methodist Church.
Richard enjoyed celebrating two special occasions this year with many family members present — his 90th birthday in February and 60th wedding anniversary in June.
Richard is survived by his wife Mary Jo of Quenemo; four sons, Roger of Iola, Russell of Wichita, Ryan of Topeka, and Rex and Diane of Ottawa; 10 grandchildren; a foster grandson; his three sisters, Verla and Darrell LaRue of Eudora, Lola DeForest of Olathe and Retha Lewis of Carthage, Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter-in-law, Kris.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Osage County Help House or the American Heart Association.
