Margaret Karen Fischer, 83, of Scranton, passed away on Friday, August 14, 2020, at the Brookside Retirement Community.  She was born on June 4, 1937, at Halls Summit, KS, the daughter of Walter and Margaret Northcott.

Karen graduated from Waverly High School in 1955 and went straight to work in Topeka.  She and Gerald were high school sweethearts and had dated since 9th grade.  They were married on August 11, 1957, and she worked in Emporia as he went through Emporia Teacher's College.  She was a stay at home mom for many years and then began her long career as secretary at Scranton Grade School.  She worked there for 27 years until she retired in 2000.  She loved everyone who came through the doors.  She was a member of the Osage City Church of Christ and spent many years teaching Bible classes, going to church camp, and faithfully serving the Lord, whom she loved so much. She dedicated a great deal of time to Relay for Life and she enjoyed working on the Election Board.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Margaret, her step-father Stanley Calvert, one brother, two sisters, and one granddaughter Rachel Kae.

She leaves her husband of 63 years, Gerald Fischer; other survivors include their children, Greg (Jeri) Fischer of Valley Falls, KS, Lisa (Jon) Green of Lyndon, KS, and Lori (Scott) Whaley of Oskaloosa, KS.; one of her greatest joys was her grandchildren:  Roger (Kim) and Scott (Sasha) Fischer, Nina, Jonathon, and Robert Green, and Zach and Aaron Whaley, great-grandchildren: Sebastian, Tristan, Ariana, Isabella, Sofia, and Presley, and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express sincere appreciation to Brookside Retirement Community for the excellent care that Karen received.  The staff there truly became family over the past five years.

Visitation will be Tuesday, August 18 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., and funeral services will be Wednesday, August 19, at 10:00 a.m., both at Feltner Funeral Home in Lyndon, KS.  Cremation will follow services and private family inurnment will be held at a later date.  If you plan on attending the visitation or service, please bring a face mask.  Memorial contributions may be made to Ronald McDonald House, sent in care of Feltner Funeral Home, 818 Topeka Ave., Lyndon, KS 66451.
