Obituary

Juliette Burnett of Topeka passed away Sunday, December 21, 2014 at the Brewster Place Retirement Community. She was born August 21,1918 on a farm near Williamsburg, Kansas, the oldest of five children to Jessie Dale and Kathryn May (Ryan) Green. Her childhood years were spent on the family farm located on the River Road east of Melvern, Kansas with the exception of one year when the family moved to Fairfield, Iowa. Juliette attended the "Rock Creek" one-room grade school near the family farm. She attended and graduated from Melvern High School in 1936. She rode a horse to and from school, high school was a distance of three miles each way.
Juliette and Stephen Grover Burnett were married on May 6,1937 in Council Grove, Kansas and began their marriage operating a farm and Livestock operation in the Melvern community. For the first twelve years they lived and farmed on rental property. In 1949, they purchased their farm on the Marais Des Cygnes River three miles west of Melvern. Juliette was a full partner in the farm, working in the field and with the livestock in addition to maintaining the home. In 1951, their first child, a son, Stephen was born. In 1955 a daughter, Susan, was added to the family. Juliette was active in the Melvern UMC, United Methodist Women, the Entre Nous Club, the Melvern Library and many other local organizations.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Stephen Grover on November 21,1991, her brother, Jessie Dale Jr. She is survived by her son Stephen (Cynthia) Burnett of Topeka; her daughter Susan (Robert) Grimmett of Topeka; sisters Margret (Otis) Patterson, Mary Kay Jones, and Phyllis (Wayne) Litch all of Melvern; Sister in Laws Jane Green of Paola; and Flossie (Burnett) Duffy of Chicago; Grandsons Stephen Grimmett, of Topeka, Michael Grimmett of Lawrence, and John (Cassandra) Grimmett, of Portland, Oregon; and many nephews and nieces.
The family would like to thank the staff of Brewster Place, Saint Francis Hospital, Comfort Keepers and Midland Hospice for their dedicated and loving care provided for our mother.
Services for Juliette will be 11:00a.m. Saturday December 27 at the Melvern Methodist Church, visitation will be Friday December 26 from 5 to 7p.m. at the Church. Burial will be in the Melvern Cemetery.
