Overbrook - George Warthen Wise Doss, at the age of 84, left to be with God on March 26, 2023. George was born February 14, 1939, in Webb City, Missouri. Visitation will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, April 15, at the Grace Community Church in Overbrook, Kansas, with memorial services immediately to follow at 11:00am. Inurnment will be in the Carbondale Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Community Christian School, sent in care of Feltner Funeral Home, 818 Topeka Avenue, Lyndon, KS 66451.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Halaine (Wise) Doss, Sr.; his older brother, Marion Doss Jr.; and his son-in-law, Tony DeBarge.

George is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Betty (Haines) Doss; all of his children, Becky Florence, Gail Sell, Marion Doss III, Sally DeBarge, Debbie (Rob) Gloss, Jenny (Bob) Klingler, Barbie (Antonio) Reyes, and Ashley (Joe) Michaelis; his 24 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

George graduated from Highland Park High School, then attended the U.S. Naval Academy and served in the USNR. A scholar at heart, with a deep love of books and learning, George attended Kansas State University, Kansas University and graduated from Washburn University.

George worked for Adams Business Forms, then worked for the Topeka Capital-Journal until he retired in 2001. After retirement, he ran an income tax preparation service from his home and worked at the Overbrook Livestock Commission until 2022. George, accompanied by Betty, enjoyed substitute teaching for the Santa Fe Trail School District from 2021 until his passing.

George loved the Lord and served Him in many ways. He could be found teaching Sunday School, Wednesday night church programs, and offering Biblical advice to those who sought his counsel as an Elder and long-time member of Grace Community Church in Overbrook. He was an active member of The Gideon's International, who served in multiple Osage County Camp officer positions, and in their outreach ministries at the local jail and at Bible distributions. He was a founding board member of the Community Christian School in Overbrook and was an ordained minister who was able to officiate the weddings of several of his grandchildren.

Always up for learning something new, carrying a conversation, "resting his eyes" in the afternoon and enjoying a good meal, George made many friends and left a positive impact on countless lives. His variety of interests and life experiences gave him many stories to share. For a time, George worked as a private investigator, a volunteer search and rescue scuba diver, a real-estate agent and a hobby farmer. He loved swimming, fishing and attending his grandchildren's sports and school events.

George was the spiritual leader of his family, and led by example. He will be remembered for his good sense of humor, his "special" peanut butter sandwiches, endless words of knowledge, biting his tongue when losing his patience (literally), and being a man who loved God and loved people.

Jesus replied: 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'
