Lyndon—Eldon W. Mounkes, 89, passed away on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at the Brookside Retirement Community in Overbrook, Kansas. He was born on October 5, 1931 in Bushong, Kansas, the son of Elisha and Hattie (McKinley) Mounkes.
Eldon graduated from Olivet High School in 1950 and served in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1955, and was involved in Operation Castle, the Hydrogen bomb test at Eniwetok. He had farmed with his father and then he farmed on his own. Eldon worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation until his retirement. He was a member of the Lyndon American Legion Post #125 and the Olivet United Methodist Church. Eldon always enjoyed outings with his dog, Grizzly.
On December 14, 1952, Eldon was married to his high school sweetheart, Donnalee Gilman in Olivet, Kansas. To this union, three children were born, Steve, Annetta and Tammi.
Eldon was preceded in death by his parents, Elisha and Hattie; his brother, Alphus Mounkes; and a grandson, Alec Mounkes.
Eldon is survived by wife Donnalee of 68 years; his three children, Steve Mounkes of Lyndon, Annetta (Danny) Hurt of Lyndon and Tammi (Dave) Thornburgh of Osage City; eight grandchildren, Mara Mounkes, Tonia Lange, Tanae Olson, Tanille Boswell, Chelsi Gardner, Blake Thornburgh and Brock Thornburgh; ten great-grandchildren, Tigean, Keldon, Bryleigh, Addyson, Korbyn, Levi, Camden, Natalee, Tenley and Jarett; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Eldon will be held at 1:00pm on Thursday, January 21 at the Feltner Funeral Chapel in Lyndon. Burial will be in the Lyndon Cemetery. Eldon will lie in state on Wednesday from 4:00 to 6:30pm at the chapel and the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30pm. Memorial contributions for Eldon may be made to LHS Girl Athletics, sent in care of Feltner Funeral Home, 818 Topeka Avenue, Lyndon, KS. 66451.
